Pams story

Pams amazing recovery following a complex peri-prosthetic femural fracture with IM nail insertion.
Pams story

Pam was admitted to hospital following a fall, where she unfortunately suffered a peri-prosthetic fracture of the distal femur above her knee replacement prosthesis. She had a past medical history of bilateral knee and hip replacements over the previous 10 years. The surgeons needed to insert an intermedullary nail fixation into her femur and she subsequently suffered with extreme pain, stiffness and swelling of the whole leg post operatively.

Pam didn't want anyone to touch her leg. She was in excruciating pain and was very reluctant to do any physio when she arrived at the community hospital for rehabilitation. Pam agreed to use the S-Press as it would support her leg and mean no one was holding it. She would have control over the amount of movement she could do and was able to relax her leg and begin some gentle moving.

Getting Pam to start moving was a huge achievement. She was so stiff after weeks of no movement and very weak through deconditioning. It was incredibly beneficial to enable her to get her muscles contracting gradually, gently and progressively. She could see the improvement in range and strength every day.

Pam reported at the end of her stay at the unit, when she was walking with her wheeled Zimmer frame and ready to go home, that she felt if she had had use of the S-Press after her joint replacement surgeries that she would have progressed a lot quicker in her recovery from those too.
